Easy Flower Bed Weed Liner and Mulch Project

We all know what Springtime means, weeds! As the Texas sun starts to warm up so are the weeds and if you are like my house the fewer chemicals we can use the better. Follow along as we revamp our mulch beds.

STEPS WE TOOK

  1. Last year we added steel liners to our front trees and flower bed, regrettably forgetting the bed liners. This was relatively easy besides the hard clay we have in our yard making hammering into the ground a task. https://www.homedepot.com/p/COL-MET-4-ft-14-Gauge-Pre-curved-Brown-Steel-Tree-Ring-Section-14TRSB/100124073?source=shoppingads&locale=en-US&mtc=Shopping-B-F_D28O-G-D28O-28_23_LAWN_ACCESSORIES-NA-NA-NA-SMART-NA-NA-SMART_SHP&cm_mmc=Shopping-B-F_D28O-G-D28O-28_23_LAWN_ACCESSORIES-NA-NA-NA-SMART-NA-NA-SMART_SHP-71700000063988474-58700005690512855-92700051915081058&gclid=CjwKCAjwjbCDBhAwEiwAiudBy4D6xHviJadebegzj7nFB3BspYjVBx8Qgdww-C9xmWhAwyI_JHb7LxoCCQsQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

  2. Clean out old mulch, plants/weeds, and level out the soil.

  3. Precut bed liner slightly larger than needed. We either cut excess or rolled it up on the edges for added weed barrier. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Vigoro-3-ft-x-50-ft-WeedBlock-Weed-Barrier-Landscape-Fabric-with-Microfunnels-1242RV/302720132?source=shoppingads&locale=en-US&mtc=Shopping-B-F_D28O-G-D28O-28_23_LAWN_ACCESSORIES-NA-NA-NA-SMART-NA-NA-SMART_SHP&cm_mmc=Shopping-B-F_D28O-G-D28O-28_23_LAWN_ACCESSORIES-NA-NA-NA-SMART-NA-NA-SMART_SHP-71700000063988474-58700005690512855-92700051915081058&gclid=CjwKCAjwjbCDBhAwEiwAiudBy_eObwtps4_6ahOraahazRHvBUShnp15tUHFVzb1mc308dRcRhJSMRoC-HwQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

  4. Staple down the liner as you go, we don't push staples all the way into the ground until we are sure the liner is placed correctly.

  5. Cut slits in the liner as you go when needed to fit plant, tree, and irrigation openings.

  6. Once the entire area is covered with liner (overlapping is okay) cut any excess or rollup along the edging. Double-check you have stapled where necessary, the mulch will hold down the liner as well.

  7. Add the mulch of your choice. This is the second year we chose this Cypress blend. It resisted bugs and looked great all year. Even better is the price and the healthy soil it created as it broke down! Make sure to not crowd plant and tree bases, allow a few inches depending on the plant.
